Summer Field School

Removing over burden from excavation site This year the Pioneer Trails Regional Museum [PTRM] will be conducting two full weeks. If a full week is too long. Consider attending any day or days during the full week.

Full week of field school is: June 22 – 28, 2008

Second full week of field school is: July, 13 - 19, 2008

Grid used to measure in the bone during field schoolCost will be $600 per person for the full week of field school or $100 per person per day. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The fixed cost will include breakfast and lunch in the field and transportation to the site. Evening meals and lodging are the responsibility of participant.

Carring ishuim on stretcher to pickup for transportation to museumSome of the activities will include instruction in geology, and stratigraphy of SW North Dakota, fossil site data collection and procedures, fossil identification, preservation and curation. Time will be spent on map and GPS reading, as well as photography of fossils for the curation records. Also a complete tour of paleo lab, how the fossils are collected, processed, and curated from start to finish will be presented.

Pioneer Trails Regional Museum will also offer a day field tours with advanced notice and a deposit is required. The cost is $ 100.00 per adult, students (ages 12-18 ) is $ 75.00 per student. And $50.00 per child. The family day tour rate is $200.00. Email paleo@ptrm.org Or call 701-523-3625 for any further assistance.

Participation is open to the public, but openings are limited. The sites are active scientific research activities and participants will be working with students and instructors from other museums and institutions collaborating with PTRM on our research. These are not commercial ventures, so no private individual collecting will be allowed. All fossils collected will stay at PTRM for research.

Topic of Study

The field of emphasis will be a ceratopsid dinosaur site that has been coming out of the bank for some time. Pioneer Trails Regional Museum will be working with North Dakota Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management, will co-sponsor scientific, and professional-conducted, fossil excavation at this site in July of 2008.
